WORLD WAR I SERVICE: HARRY STYLES CLEARWATER

The information below is from Harry's Defence Force Personnel Record, from Archives NZ.

Biographical Details

His Attestation 12 August 1915 at Palmerston North.  It says he was born on 16 September 1894 at Riversdale, New Zealand.  His trade is given as Motor driver.  His last address was the Mt Cook Motor Company, Fairlie.  He had passed the 4th Educational Standard.  His last employer was the Mt Cook Motor Company.  He had some previous military service.  He is described as 20 years 10 months ol, 5 feet 8 inches tall; weighing 164 lbs; chest measurements were 34 - 37 inches; he had fresh complexion; grey eyes; brown hair; brown hair.  He was a Presbyterian.

A second Attestation is dated 5 May 1917 at Queenstown.  It says he was born on 16 September 1895 at Riversdale, New Zealand.  His father is given as Frederick Clearwater and mother as Lucy Clearwater both of whom were born in New Zealand.  His trade or calling was Motor Driver, and he last  resided at Queenstown.  He had passed the 4th Educational Standard.  His last employer was J.S. Collins, Queenstown.  He was single.  He had previously served in the 2 Battalion, NZ Rifle Brigade - but was Medically Unfit. 

His physical description is given as 21 years of age, 5 feet 9 inches in height, with chest measurements of 34 - 36 1/2 inches; fair complexion; blue eyes; light brown hair.  Religious profession was Presbyterian.  He was classed as Fit - Class C2.

Service Details

Harry's service number was 24/1261.  although in 1917 he was issued a new number of 25176

  • Posted to Rifleman, C Company, 2nd Battalion, Trentham Regiment 13 August 1915
  • Transferred to Rifleman, B Company, 2nd Battalion, Trentham Regiment 31 August 1915
  • A Medical Board held 13 September 1915 found he had "chronic arthritis of big toe of several years standing" and found he as not fit for general service and "Recommended that he be discharged".
  • A further Medical Board on 17 December 1917 re-examined him and classified him as B2.  This Board also considered 2 letters from William Watt of Frankton, Lake Wakatipu and Alec Stewart of Queenstown, who were both doctors and testified they had attened Harry over a period of time for chronic arthritis.
