WORLD WAR I SERVICE: FRANCIS HENRY CLEARWATER

The information below is from Francis' Defence Force Personnel Record, from Archives NZ.

Biographical Details

According to his History-Sheet, his occupation was Farmer and his last employer was Robert Clearwater; his last address was Mataura; his religion was Methodist, and his birth-date was recorded as 4 April 1893.  His next of kin was listed as Mrs Robert Clearwater (Mother), of Mataura, Southland.

His physical description at Discharge is given as: 5 foot 8 inches, 164lbs; his overall condition was deemed to be Class A.

Service Details

Francis' service number was 15136. Beginning on 5 April 1916, he served 138 days in NZ, 3 years 153 days overseas, for a total of 3 years and 291 days, serving in Western Europe through 1916-18.  He was discharged 20 January 1920.

  1. After a bout of Influenza, he was examined by a Medical Board on 6 October 1919 at Hemel Hempstead and found to be Fit for General Service, and instructed to report to Torquay.

He was formally discharged on 20 January 1920, and his intended address was Mataura.  On that date he was also transferred from the strength of the NZ Expeditionary Force to the Unattached List General List with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.

He was awarded the British War Medal 1914-19 and the Victory Medal.
